Here, There, and Everywhere: My Life Recording The Beatles by Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey is probably my favorite book on The Beatles because it allows me to take such an intimate look at the recording of classic Beatles LPs like 1966′s Revolver, the first album that Emerick was lead recording engineer on.

The book isn’t entirely about recording The Beatles, it’s really a Geoff Emerick autobiography with an obvious focus on his time recording The Beatles, however if you think that that may make it less interesting, I really don’t think that is true. I actually think it helps make his stories about The Beatles seem more “real.” I also enjoyed his perspective on life in London at the 1960s. He had a keen interest in technology and reading his story about how he was interested in this new fangled technology called “stereo” I believe this was in the late ’50s was very cool.

This book gives a great look into The Beatles as musicians although not really in a music theory sort of way, if you’re interested in that – you should check out the two books that are called The Beatles as Musicians.

We get a glimpse of Paul working tirelessly to get his bass lines on Sgt. Pepper perfect and we see George improve his guitar playing abilities through the decade. Emerick was an essential part of the band’s sound during their most creative period in the mid ’60s. And that means he has really interesting stories on how some of the most unusual sounds that The Beatles got down on tape came to be.

He describes in great detail how George wrote the backwards guitar solo in “I’m Only Sleeping.” He also talks about how they got the distortion sound on the guitar on “Revolution.” All of these kind of details that may not be of too much interest to casual fans are extremely interesting to people like myself who like to record music.

It’s not all about the music though. He also describes in great detail what it was like to be in the studio with these guys. He describes their personalities in ways that makes them seem much more human. Overall he does make Paul come off sounding the best probably. Some may question his motives on that as he was closest to Paul of all of the Beatles and he ended up working on some of his solo albums but it’s more likely that Paul was the type of guy that most people would like most in a day to day sort of situation.

Rock Band: The Beatles is a music video game published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts. This game will be well-suited with all rock band instrument controllers and other music-based video game peripherals.

In the gameplay, players are allowed to perform as members of The Beatles by providing up to six players with the feature to play three different controllers designed after music instruments — a guitar controller for lead guitar, a drum controller and three microphones for vocals. There is an option known as Quickplay in both online or offline where the players can enjoy the full track list.

When singing vocals, the player must match their pitch to that of original vocals. For that, a pitch indicator is provided in the game which will display the singer’s accuracy relative to the original pitch. For competition sense, there is a performance meter which drops down if a player fails to match the notes. This may lead the player to get out of the game, once the meter drops out completely. In such situations, a player can be saved by another player if he activates “Beatlemania”, which can also be used to temporarily increase the count of the points that the band earns.

During the course of the game, the Beatles extraordinary list of music will take the players on a journey through the legacy of the band’s legendary career. The audio and visuals look extra-ordinary as it is considered to be one of the highlights of the game. In short, Rock Band: The Beatles is a video game using different mechanics when compared to other music video games.

Excellent Write up of the Box Sets Release and the New Beatles Rock Band Video Game

IT’S pop music’s most distinguished and lucrative catalogue. Yet, as most artists have embraced new media in the past 10 years, the Beatles’ canon has been the missing link. That will change on Wednesday, September 9 – 09/09/09. Although there has been no shortage of Beatles-related curios in the past 20 years, next week marks a significant day in Beatles history.

Finally, their catalogue of albums will be released in luxurious, digitally remastered glory. And, almost unfathomably, the Fab Four, who broke up almost 40 years ago, are the hook behind this year’s most anticipated video game. The Beatles: Rock Band is pitched as both a watershed moment in gaming and a proactive rejuvenation of a legacy for a new generation of potential fans. Still, the game has created a schism among Beatles militants, who are divided over whether it is a brilliant strategic move or cynical exploitation.

It was Dhani Harrison, the 31-year-old gaming-fanatic son of late Beatles guitarist George, who convinced the estate to consider a game based on Beatles music. Throughout the game’s two-year development, Harrison would receive a different version each week and play it obsessively, before proffering technical feedback and challenging staff at the game’s developer, Harmonix, to beat him.

The catalogue remastering, however, came from the top. Beatles tragics bemoan the thin, shrill transfer to CD the band’s catalogue received in 1987. It’s not as if fans have ever stopped buying their records. The Beatles have sold 600 million albums since 1963, 57 million since 1991.

Four years ago, Abbey Road’s staff technicians began transferring the master tapes to digital files. The result is 14 stereo albums, sold individually or boxed together. All feature new mini-documentaries, artwork and liner notes, archival photos and historical notes. A second box set presents every existing mono mix of the band’s music.

There was significant crossover in staff and technology employed with the game and the catalogue remastering. The techniques used by Abbey Road engineers to clean up the tapes were similar to those Giles Martin, the 39-year-old son of the Beatles’ celebrated producer, Sir George, used to separate the instruments on to individual tracks as he formatted the game’s music.

“The Beatles haven’t been heard in the right way for a long time,” Martin says. “The quality of the CD back in the late 1980s was no good. The Beatles were a loud, vibrant, young band and this finally captures that.”

Previous Article from Rolling Stone;

On September 9 & 15th, 2009, after a nearly 22-year wait, digitally remastered versions of all of the Beatles studio albums will be released, a press release has confirmed. Each album will feature the track listings and artwork as it was originally released in the U.K. and come with expanded booklets including original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. For a limited time, each of the Fab Fours 12 proper albums will be embedded with a brief documentary about its making. The re-releases will include the Beatles 12 studio albums and Magical Mystery Tour as well as Past Masters Vol. I and II, which will be packaged as one collection. All 14 discs will be available with DVDs of the documentaries in a stereo box set, and a set titled The Beatles in Mono featuring 10 discs will also be released.

art 11 Beatles Were Experimental Music

Sadly I’ve found that many people think of The Beatles only as the band that sang songs such as “She Loves You” & “Can’t Buy Me Love.” While these simple early tunes are great and have lasted the test of time. It’s The Beatles more artistic, experimental songs that I feel are their real legacy. They are the songs that are still inspiring thinking musical artists nearly 40 years after they last recorded together.

These seven songs were The Beatles at their most experimental. Not all of these songs are among their best, although some certainly are! but they are all a cherished part of The Beatles back catalog to me.

#1 “What’s The New Mary Jane”
This song which features only John Lennon, George Harrison and Lennon’s soon to be wife Yoko Ono. It was not actually released until The Beatles Anthology 3. It was intended for The Beatles incredible 1968 double album known as The White Album, it was actually self titled. It was not included due to time constraints.

The song features a simple piano part, bizarre lyrics, and insane sound effects. The last 4 minutes of the song is basically just spacey sound effects. It’s definitely one of those songs that’s quite hard to describe with words. It’s definitely a real trip.

#2 “Revolution”
This 8 minute track was included on The White Album and has probably become The Beatles most infamous track. Many hate it. Some love it. Count me among those that loves it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t listen to it every time I put the album on, it’s not that kind of track. But when I do listen to it, I still find it fascinating.

#3 “Tomorrow Never Knows”
Incredibly the last track on Revolver, “Tomorrow Never Knows” was actually the first song recorded for the album. I think that’s incredible as the song, even 42 years later, still sounds like the future. With lyrics from the book The Psychedelic Experience (which was based upon the Tibetan Book of the Dead), backwards guitars, insane sounding tape loops, this was a song that sounded thousands of years removed from the mop top hits of just 2 years previous.

#4 “Wild Honey Pie”
This is a strange little song which was completely sung and performed by Paul McCartney. It just consists of the refrain “Honey Pie” and some bizarre sounding guitars.

#5 “I am the Walrus”

Possibly The Beatles most perfect weird psychedelic song. It’s endlessly listenable as there are so many layers to it that one can literally hear something they’ve never heard before even on their 1000th listen.

This was The Beatles at the peak of their “studio as an instrument” phase and it’s still inspiring countless experimental rock musicians to this day. Forget “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” it’s all about “I Am The Walrus.”

#6 “Strawberry Fields Forever”

If “Strawberry Fields Forever” isn’t quite as weird as “I Am The Walrus,” it’s probably even more perfect. It’s a truly brilliant song and much like “I Am The Walrus” it’s the an amazing example of the “studio as an instrument” aesthetic that The Beatles perfected in 1967.

#7 “Within you without you”

I feel this song often gets short shrift. And yes, it’s very experimental. A “pop” song with an all Indian instrumental? Sure there was “Love You To” & “The Inner Light” before, but this one took it to the next level. I think it’s a brilliant song that fits on Sgt. Pepper perfectly. It’s a trip through some bizarre carnival and you have to make a stop in India while you are there, of course.

The game Beatles: Rock Band will be thoroughly enjoyed if the player is a Beatle fan, but even a non-gamer can enjoy this game too. Gamers who are not aware of Beatles music will also enjoy this game, as the game is very entertaining with amazing graphics. The story line of this game is better in comparison to other rock band games and is sure to gain more new fans.

The Beatles: Rock Band includes 45 fantastic Beatles songs that are worth playing and singing the melody and its harmony parts, on your own or in association with two or three more friends, to keep the singers in high spirits. Playing the rock band drums can be enjoyed by the players as it looks similar to real drums, besides offering good practice. Playing guitar and bass parts also gives a very realistic feel. The singing parts is a lot of fun and learning it becomes interesting and simple.

The game has so many awesome features that the players do not know when the night passes away. The psychedelic game graphics are really cool in songs such as `Lucy in the sky with diamonds`, and make the best of the performances at Shea Stadium on The Ed Sullivan Show. This video game also is featured with tutorials that impart lessons on becoming a better drummer as well as a singer. The online play allows the players to learn, practice, enjoy, and also compete with other players all over the world. The video game offers the pleasure of real studio chatter in which none of the players must have experienced, as it has never been released before.

Of course, there is no doubt that this is one of the video games that Beatles fans will bowl over with anxiety and enthusiasm. Even the most snobbish type of people, will also enjoy this game, provided they give a try as it offers authentic fun. The Beatles Rock Band came out on September 9, 2009, and on the same day the newly CD sets re-mastered Beatles came out. Both were welcomed by people.

The music of the game comprises of nearly 25% of the songs that were released during the Beatles career and makes a good sample. They include some highly loved early classics such as `I want to hold your hand`, `I feel fine` and `I saw her standing there`, besides the psychedelic era songs `Paperback Writer`, `Sgt. Pepper’s Hearts Club Band` and `I am the Walrus`. The music also has the 68-69 era songs of `Revolution’, `Here comes the Sun` and `Get Back` with a total of 45 songs.

The cool things of playing the game is that the players get to play the entire series starting from the 1960 The Cavern in Liverpool to all the way to the 1969 Abbey Road recording. The game graphics are astonishing and the characters resemble the Beatles, but there are different stages that offer psychedelic images for songs such as `I am the Walrus`. Instruments such as guitars look replicate to the instruments. Harmony singing is facilitated and friends get to sing on the rock band in unison having a novel experience. Also the fact that more than one singer can sing at once really makes the Beatles Rock Band an ultimate party game.

When four Liverpudlian lads formed a band in the 60s, the history of music changed forever. The Beatles went on to become one of the most influential bands in the social and pop movements of the 60s and continue to remain popular now, nearly five decades later. Many fans from all around the world may have relinquished true Beatlemania, but are still keen to witness some of the landmarks and areas that so inspired the band in their early years.

Retracing the steps of the Beatles may sound like an impossible task when you think of the many tours and overseas jaunts the band took over the years, but the Beatles enjoyed their early years close to home and any Beatles fan can enjoy the chance to see some of the most famous clubs and sights connected with the band.

The first place for any fan hoping to retrace the steps of the Beatles is the streets of Liverpool.

The earliest incarnation of the Beatles saw the now infamous John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and of course Pete Best (later to be replaced by Ringo Starr) finding their feet in the musical landscape they were set to change forever. An early additional member, bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, left the band after a short period of time and the Beatles continued to refine their sound in Liverpool and Hamburg for the first few years. There are a large number of guided walks in Liverpool that can show fans around highlights such as the Cavern Club – the venue in which the Beatles’ popularity blossomed.

A range of exhibitions are also on offer in Liverpool, such as The Beatles Story, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the feeling of the times. Many also like to pay a visit to Penny lane, the street in the band’s hometown that inspired the popular song of the same name.

Quickly gaining in popularity, the band had its first recording session at the now iconic Abbey Road Studios in London and the album went on to enjoy a number one spot in the British chart. It was a sign of things to come, and the band topped charts consistently over the following decade. The studio was later immortalised in the album Abbey Road. This London sight is another ideal destination for anyone hoping to chart the UK history of The Beatles for themselves.

By booking hotels in Liverpool and London and setting out with some Beatles literature, retracing the story of the Beatles can be an amazing experience for any fan of the fab four.

New Beatles Set Stereo Edition The Beatles Stereo Remastered Box Set Reviewed

If you’re like most Beatles fans then you already own all of their albums on CD (in stereo) and you may be wondering why you should buy the same mixes on CD again just because they are “remastered.” In fact I can imagine that you may be quite skeptical about it. The appeal of The Beatles Mono Box Set is easier to understand. After all, those mono mixes have never been made available on CD before and some of the mono mixes have actually never been released in any format before! So to me it’s obvious why any curious Beatles fan would want to hear those mono mixes (“as The Beatles were meant to be heard”) but what about The Stereo Box Set?

Well, I have been listening to the CDs in the Beatles In Stereo Box Set pretty much non-stop since I got it and I am absolutely amazed at how much better they sound than the old CDs. I think the best way to describe the improvement in sound is like watching your favorite movie first on an old VHS tape and then in Blu-Ray HD. Yes, it’s the same movie with the same plot, but it sure looks a lot better in blu-ray. Yes, these are the same songs, with the same (brilliant) music but they sound immeasurably better on these new CDs.

In fact, that may not even be a good comparison, because with music I think it’s more important that you can clearly hear each part to really fully appreciate the music. And that’s the great thing about these remastered stereo mixes, little bits in the music that were hard to hear before are now clear as a bell. It’s amazing all of the things I’m hearing in these songs for the very first time even though I’ve heard all of these songs hundreds of times before.

What they’ve managed to do with these remasters is really a miracle. They managed to capture all of the original analog warmth and “feeling” of the original tapes (these CDs sound much “warmer” than do the old ones) and they’ve also managed to make all of the music more “clear” so that individual parts can be heard without straining to hear them. The bass cuts through the mix like never before. The drums sound much more powerful (they were often buried in the old mixes.) And the vocals are much more clear. Now instead of it just being a wall of sound sort of effect, you can really pick out each of the vocal harmony parts. To my ears, this is a big improvement.

Again, I was very concerned that all of this “power” and “clarity” would come at the expense of the warmth of the recordings, I was concerned that they would suck the life and ambiance out of the recordings. I was worried that they would participate in the “loudness wars” and compress these recordings to death. I’m happy to say that they none of they managed to avoid all of these potential pitfalls.

Along with the great sound, I think most fans will be very pleased with the excellent packaging. It’s really a huge improvement over the old CDs. For example The White Album now comes with a poster, just like it did back in the day when it was sold as a vinyl LP!

I have no reservations in recommending that every Beatles fan buy this box set. It would also make a fantastic birthday or Christmas gift for a Beatles fan in your family.
